GLF welcomes back Juan Gabriel Valdés

GLF is delighted to welcome back Juan Gabriel Valdés as an active member.

Valdés first joined GLF in 2013 but became an inactive member between 2014 to 2018 while he served as Chile's Ambassador to the United States.

Juan Gabriel Valdés is a career-long diplomat having served as Chile's Ambassador to Spain from 1990 and 1994, Chile's Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1999 to 2000, Chile's Permanent Representative to the UN from 2000 to 2003, Chile's Ambassador to Argentina from 2003 to 2004 and from 2004 to 2006, he was the Special Representative of Chile to the United Nations.


GLF in New York

GLF Vice Chairman Chester Crocker and Projects Director Amitav Banerji were in New York for part of the ‘high-level week’ of the United Nations General Assembly, coinciding with the presence there of a large number of Heads of State and Government. The Vice Chairman met with two African leaders within that window of opportunity. The Projects Director separately met with some partner organisations which promote common values and objectives, with a view to raising awareness of GLF as well as exploring possible project opportunities.

A number of GLF Members were also in New York during this period in the pursuit of other roles, some of which are of interest to GLF. The Projects Director made the fullest possible use of the opportunity to consult the visiting Members and benefit from their advice on countries and issues with which they are particularly familiar.

Helen Clark appointed EITI Board Chair

The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) Members’ Meeting confirmed the appointment of Rt Hon. Helen Clark as the Chair of the EITI.

Incoming Chair, Rt Hon. Helen Clark, expressed her appreciation of the work of previous leaders of the EITI and commented: "At EITI, I will be working with more than 50 countries globally to improve transparency, accountability, and governance, and to raise the bar for extractives governance. I am grateful for the role Fredrik and the outgoing Board have played in forging consensus on the revised 2019 EITI Standard, and I look forward to taking this important work forward."​



GLF continues discussions with Armenian President

Following the visit by a GLF team to Armenia in May 2019 at the invitation of President Armen Sarkissian, a further meeting was held with the President in Geneva on 27 June. Once again, the GLF team consisted of Micheline Calmy-Rey (team leader), Thomas Pickering and Hervé Ladsous, supported by Projects Director Amitav Banerji.

The discussions in Geneva built upon the earlier consultations in Yerevan, enabling a more informed exchange on certain policy issues to which the Armenian Government attaches priority.






Enrique Iglesias appointed EU Special Adviser for Venezuela

Federica Mogherini appoints Enrique Iglesias as Special Adviser for Venezuela

In line with the European Union's firm commitment to contribute to a peaceful and democratic solution to the Venezuelan crisis and as a follow-up to discussions held in the context of the International Contact Group, High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini has appointed Enrique Iglesias as her Special Adviser for Venezuela.

The appointment or Mr Iglesias - a Spanish-Uruguayan economist who is a former secretary-general of the Ibero-American General Secretariat and was also President of the Inter-American Development Bank as well as Foreign Minister of Uruguay - will enable a more sustained and reinforced political and diplomatic engagement on the situation in Venezuela.

Mr. Iglesias will support the work of the EU and of the ICG to help promote a peaceful, democratic solution to the crisis in Venezuela, through free and fair elections. He will provide advice to the High Representative and to the ICG on steps that could be taken to work towards these goals and will also engage in outreach efforts to relevant stakeholders in Venezuela and to international and regional actors.




GLF team visits Armenia at invitation of President

At the invitation of President Armen Sarkissian, a GLF team visited Yerevan on 12-14 May 2019.

The GLF team was led by Micheline Calmy-Rey, President of the Swiss Confederation 2007 and 2011 and Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs 2003-11 and included Thomas Pickering, US Under-Secretary of State for Political Affairs 1997-2000 and Hervé Ladsous, a senior French diplomat who was United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations 2011 -2017. It was accompanied by GLF Projects Director Amitav Banerji.

During the visit the GLF team met with senior representatives of both the executive and legislative branches of government. Meetings were held with Mr Armen Sarkissian, President of the Republic; Mr Tigran Avinyan, Deputy Prime Minister (in the Prime Minister’s absence on official overseas travel); Mr Zohrab Mnatsakanyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs; Mr Ararat Mirzoyan, President of the National Assembly; and Mr Armen Grigoryan, Secretary of National Security Council.

The team also held discussions with two think-tanks - the Armenian Research and Development Institute (ARDI) and the International Center for Human Development (ICHD) - and visited the TUMO Centre for Creative Technologies. In addition, there was an interactive session with a group of diplomats and other civil servants.
