The GLF International Council is a group of organisations and individuals who recognize the importance of GLF’s work and support the Foundation financially. Its membership is by invitation.
GLF values input from its supporters in the business community who share the view that improving governance represents one of the biggest challenges of our time.
With democracies around the world under increasing stress in the face of technological innovation, mass migrations, populism, ultra-nationalism, political paralysis and economic anxiety, government institutions are often proving to be either weak and ineffective or rigid and authoritarian. Increasingly transnational actors, such multinational companies, international non-governmental organisations and various opinion-formers wield great power and influence and help shape the environment in which states and political leaders act.
GLF values its connections with members of the International Council throughout the year to share their ideas and understand their aspirations in order to learn, identify project opportunities and assist them in any way that is in line with GLF’s own principles. Occasionally the opportunity may arise for direct participation in a particular project - for example, to provide independent advice on how to promote a positive climate for foreign investment, or how to restructure development activities to alleviate poverty and the causes of civil conflict, and thus help people in troubled lands move into more productive lives.
The level of involvement of members of the International Council is entirely at their discretion. The group does not meet formally nor make collective decisions but its Members are consulted individually, on an occasional basis, by the GLF CEO and Projects Director.
Members of the GLF International Council are invited to participate in the Foundation's Annual Meetings where they are actively encouraged to contribute their specialist knowledge to GLF's strategic direction, to share best case practice from the private sector, and to enrich debate on how GLF might contribute to the solution of complex problems in various countries.
GLF International Council Members are kept informed of the Foundation's activities by the GLF Secretariat and, on request, by briefings on projects by the GLF CEO, GLF Projects Director and, when possible, the GLF Chairman. GLF Members can also at times provide corporations with unique political analysis.
