Biographical Information

President, Swiss Confederation 2003 & 2008

As a member of the Radical Free Democratic Party (FDP), Pascal Couchepin began his political career in the canton of Valais, where he was a member of the City Council of Martigny from 1968 to 1998 and Mayor of Martigny from 1984 to 1998.

He was elected to the Swiss Federal Council in 1998 where he served until 2009,  first as Minister of the Economy (1998 – 2003), then as Minister of Home Affairs (2003 – 2009) and twice as President of the Swiss Confederation (2003 and 2008).

Pascal Couchepin also served as President of the Ministerial Assembly of the World Trade Organisation (1998), Head of Delegation to the Doha Round of the WTO (2001) and as a Member of the Board of Governors of the World Bank (1998 – 2003).

Activity after public politics

Pascal Couchepin has served as Board Director of various companies in the fields of telecommunications, energy and insurance.
